Stingrays vs Discovery Prep October 29

Boys football plays again October 29th vs Discovery Prep at 1:00 p.m. The Stingrays are lighting things up scoring 50 points per game and winning by 20 points per game. Only 2 regular season games remain, and we're expecting good weather at Daniel's Field (845 12th St, San Pedro) on Saturday. So bring out the crazy hats, face paint, weird wigs and 'Go Stingrays' signs in support of our boys and their amazing season. Go Stingrays!!

Stingrays Football Season Back on Track

On a sad Monday morning, Aug 29th Pacific Lutheran High was compelled to cancel its 2011 football season due to lack of players. After eight consecutive years of CIF football this was devasting news to the athletes, their families and the student body.

On Tuesday afternoon new factors emerged that led Pacific Lutheran to revisit that decision. Foremost was a request from the Coastal League asking Pacific Lutheran to play its league games so the league winner would receive an automatic playoff bid from CIF. If Pacific Lutheran could not accommodate this request it meant the remaining league schools, Price, Lighthouse Christian and Rolling Hills Prep, would have to play 3 league games to receive an automatic post-season bid, otherwise they would only receive at-large consideration. This would have created a scheduling nightmare for our league schools, so Pacific Lutheran took the request to heart.

Around the same time some players who decided not to play football this year began contacting coach Salas about coming back to help the team. With that information the administration issued one last 'All hands on deck' clarion to the student body to try and salvage the season. And though the players who first approached coach Salas did not pan out, some brand new players did. And that's all it took to get our season back! By September 12th we had a rebuilt schedule with 8 games, and were working on qualifying the new players for competition. Welcome to small school sports.

Returning starters for the Stingrays include seniors Jonathan Garcia, Seth Abrams, Matt Mengel and Davis Rupp. All four players are expected to carry the squad through another tough year of Iron Man football, where most of the boys play on both sides of the ball. Coach Gene Salas was there with us last year in a similar scenario, but this year he has no true lineman. So out came coach Salas' version of the spread offense, with lots of misdirection, verticle options, varied sets, motions and double passes. It will be an entertaining brand of football - even for 8-man. So join us for the rest of the season, and bring out the whole family to our home field in San Pedro.

New Head Coach Gene Salas

On August 16, 2010 Pacific Lutheran turned the page to begin a new chapter in its football program. At a chapel meeting Mr. Fitzgerald introduced our new head coach Gene Salas. Coach Salas comes to us with over 15 years of football coaching experience, and a stated objective to "use his experience and leadership abilities to create discipline, character and community within the program." Growing up in the South Bay, coach Salas played football at El Segundo High, earned his bachelors at Cal State Long Beach and Grace Bible College, and continued post graduate studies at Calvary Bible College. His family recently relocated to the Palos Verdes peninsula after 12 years in the San Diego area. He and wife Diana attend Kings Harbor Church in Torrance with their two children, Malachi and Keanna. We look forward to a new season with coach Salas, and encourage you to offer warm greetings to him and his family at our home games. We hope to see you in the bleachers.
