English as a Second Language Syllabus

Course Summary:

The students in this class have reached differing levels of English fluency and each student will have his/her own strengths and weaknesses in the skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. This course will improve each student’s English and expose him/her to American culture.

  • Focus on Grammar Interactive online
  • Handouts
  • Internet vocabulary and grammar resources
  • Interlex (free downloadable program for making individualized and class flashcards) or similar software
  • SRA reading
  • Junior Scholastic magazine

Assessment:

The final grade for this course will be based on points accumulated from:

  Quizzes and tests
  Homework
  Journals and other writing assignments
  Presentations
  Major projects
  Extra credit will be offered periodically throughout each semester

  Monday Culture and vocabulary with Sunday cartoons
  “Weekend Report” public speaking
  Tuesday Grammar
    Reading
  Wednesday Discuss chapel
    Individual reading, SRA
    Help with classes
  Thursday Grammar quiz
  Friday Vocabulary quiz
    “What I learned this week” public speaking
    Video recording of the (BBC?) news and discussion

White Board Formula:

Each class period students will be given at least one educational objective (what skill is being taught during the class), an activity to reinforce this educational objective (what students will be engaged in to achieve the objective), and an assessment for the activity. Educational objectives are taken from California Content Standards or other standards appropriate for the course.

ELSR Integration:

Pacific Lutheran High School’s ESLR’s (Expected School-wide Learning Results), adopted curriculum, and the Visual Arts Content Standards are integrated into one cohesive unit to maximize student-learning. Art I course will thus:

 
  • P - Give students the ability to see how their standards-based subjects put Christ first
  • L - Teach and/or reinforce critical thinking and self-learning skills
  • H - Prepare students to be effective communicators able to utilize technology
