This is an introductory science course which presents incoming freshmen with an overview of scientific concepts including: the scientific approach to problem solving, measurement, and critical thinking; biology; chemistry; meteorology; oceanography; physics; earth science; and technology. Awareness of technological advances and the need for scientific literacy are encouraged through regular investigation of contemporary science issues. This course leads students to a greater appreciation and curiosity of God’s creation and provides a firm foundation of scientific literacy that will provide them with skills and knowledge needed for more advanced science courses.
The Science Department at Pacific Lutheran believes scientific literacy enhances a student’s ability to appreciate our Creator and the world which God has created. Through problem solving, qualitative and quantitative analyses, and verbal and written communications, students develop an appreciation for science as an investigative process rather than merely a body of knowledge. Students develop skills to investigate and understand the relationships between science, technology, society, and the quality of life.
All incoming freshman will take General Science. To fulfill graduation requirements, students must successfully complete a year of biological science (Biology) and one year of physical science (Chemistry or Physics).
