Physical Education Syllabus

Mr. Bareford 2008-2009

Course Background and Description
As students participate in a variety of aerobic and endurance activities, they will gain the knowledge they need to enjoy physical activity for years to come. They will discover the difference between cannot and will not... between bodily injury and discomfort. They will learn proper form for jogging, sprinting, and simple strength training. Also, as students participate in a variety of sports they will be instructed in the rules and strategies that correspond to each. They will learn the proper technique for many of the motions involved in sports (i.e. shooting a basketball, throwing a football, and kicking a soccer ball) and increase their motor skills and coordination as they do so. To encourage physical fitness and assess student performance, students will be given certain class-wide and personal goals they must meet by each quarter's end. Finally, students will learn good sportsmanship and how to maintain a Christian attitude toward their neighbors as they enjoy the physical bodies God has blessed them with.

Class Materials
Students will need a PLHS P.E. uniform, which must be worn every class period. If a student already owns a uniform from last year, it will be acceptable as long as it is in good condition. All uniform size orders will be taken the first day of class. Students must also wear shoes that accommodate a variety of athletic activities. Such shoes have good traction and sufficient ankle support (skate shoes are a very poor choice, for ladies, heels are obviously not an option)

Evaluation
All students will begin each quarter with an "A." However, there are a variety of things that can lower their grade. Students will be evaluated on the following:

  • Mile time - Students will run a mile once a week. Their times will be recorded. personal mile-time improvement will be evaluated once every 3 weeks. If students fail to meet their target time on an evaluated run, their grade will be lowered by 3%
  • Push-ups - Students will perform daily pushups. Twice per quarter they will perform for a grade and will need to meet a certain minimum requirement. Minimum requirements will be raised throughout each semester. Minimum requirements will differ for males and females. If students fail to meet the minimum requirement, their grade will be lowered by 3%
  • Sit-ups - Students will perform daily sit-ups/crunches. Twice per quarter they will perform for a grade and will need to meet a certain minimum requirement. Minimum requirements will be raised throughout each semester. Minimum requirements will differ for males and females. If students fail to meet the minimum requirements, their grade will be lowered by 3%
  • Participation (Effort, Attitude, Obedience) - All students are blessed with different talents and have developed differing levels of skill. Students who are poor at a given sport will not receive a low grade because of their lacking still. Therefore, participation will be the major determining factor for how students are assessed as they perform in each activity. Students must demonstrate high effort, obey class instructions, and contribute to the class's learning atmosphere by refraining from disruptive behavior. Failure to meet any of these standards will result in a participation mark. Participation marks are negative. Each mark will lower a student's grade by 1%
  • Dressing Out - Students must dress for class in their PLHS P.E. uniforms every day. If students fail to do so, they will receive grace twice per quarter. However, for each instance thereafter, their grade will be lowered by 3%

Classroom Rules
Refer mostly to the PLHS student handbook, 2008. Generally, students must be dressed and ready to go before the 7th period bell rings and must pay attention to teacher's instruction at all times. Other rules more specific to the teacher will be explicitly stated (and repeated when necessary) in class. Respect and courtesy to both the teacher and fellow students will be enforced to ensure a class environment that is cohesive to learning.

Tardies and Absences
Unexcused tardies and absences will be treated equally in regards to their negative affect on a student’s grade. Two unexcused tardies or absences per quarter will be forgiven; however, every instance thereafter will drop the student’s quarter grade by 1%.
