Goals:
The student who satisfactorily completes the requirements of this course will learn of our Sinful human condition and God’s saving Grace for him/her in Jesus.
They will do this
- by having short daily devotions
- by an introduction/review of the Bible, God, the Ten Commandments (the Law), Jesus, justification, sanctification, repentance
- by learning how God has worked in the lives of persons in the Bible (such as Esther, Ruth, Gideon, Solomon, the twelve disciples, and others)
- students will choose (with the teacher's approval) and present to the class about a person in the Bible
- by learning how God has worked in other Christians’ lives:
- students will read missionary newsletters
- students will read Eric Liddel’s biography, watch Chariots of Fire, and respond in discussions and writing. Some issues brought up will be obedience and one’s calling
- students will read excerpts from other biographies and respond in discussions and writing. Some issues brought up will be our sinfulness, God’s saving Grace, prayer, and forgiveness
- students will present to the class about a Christian of the student’s own choosing (with the teacher's approval)
- having the opportunity to ask their own questions and have them addressed in class (occasional "Question Fridays")
In addition to the Bible and the above biographical works, we will also refer to the Good News periodical and Luther’s Small Catechism.
Class Materials:
- Bible
- Notebook or section in notebook - college rule paper
- Folder or binder for class handouts and homework
- Pens - at least one in blue or black ink - and a pencil. Red or neon colors are not acceptable for homework
Evaluation:
Your final grade for this course will be based on points accumulated from:
- Quizzes
- Homework
- Writing assignments
- presentations
- Major projects
- Unit tests
- Semester exams (worth 20% of your semester grade)
- Extra credit will be offered periodically throughout each semester
Tests and Quizzes:
Pop-quizzes may be given at any time. However, you will always know in advance about a test. If you missed one or more days prior to a test and are present on the day of the test, I will assume that you are going to take the test unless you discuss your situation with me prior to the class period.
Late Work:
All homework should be completed and turned in at the beginning of the class period that it is due. It is not fair for me or your classmates if you hand in work late. Late homework will be accepted one day late for a reduction of 20% of the points earned. Homework two days late will be accepted for a reduction of 30% of the points earned. Homework will not be accepted more than two days late unless excused because of illness or other approved reason.
Late major projects or papers will be accepted one day late for a reduction of 10% of the points, two days late for a reduction of 20% of the points, or three days late for a reduction of 30% of the possible points.
Class Rules:
- Be in your seat on time.
- Be prepared.
- Follow directions the first time.
- Respect others, yourself, and property.
- No food, gum, or drink in class (water is permitted).
- No cell phones should be seen or heard in class.
- Cheating (including plagiarism) is not tolerated. Students are to do their own work for everything including homework, quizzes, tests, projects, and papers unless they are given permission to work with others. Cheating results in an automatic “F” for the assignment for all parties involved and further discipline as stated in the school’s discipline policy.
I expect all students to adhere to these rules and conduct themselves in a mature manner appropriate for a Christian classroom.
Additional Help:
I pray that this class will help students to explore their own relationship with Jesus. to that end, I am willing to spend extra time helping students and encourage them to ask questions or to arrange a time outside of class to get help from me. I appreciate the support of family and your interest in your student’s studies and progress. Please call me at school if you have any concerns or comments about your child’s work.
